The Emmaus movement, which has its roots in the Cursillo movement of the Roman Catholic Church, is under the direction of The Upper Room (a unit of the Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church). It is similar in structure to other renewal weekends, such as De Colores, Tres Dias, Cursillo, and Chrysalis. It is an ecumenical movement focused on developing Christian leaders in the local church. Emmaus is open to all Christians of any denomination. The Grand Rapids Emmaus Community serves the western half of Michigan's lower peninsula -- Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Big Rapids, and Holland. There is also a local Chrysalis community in Western Michigan which serves this same area with renewal weekends for High School and young adult Christians.
